“Live From Diabetes Management Arena, YOU!”
For those of you who are having trouble “sticking” with a consistent program of effective diabetes self-management, here is something to think about…
My husband and I were talking about the long gaps of time between his band’s practice sessions. He was explaining to me that it is hard to get connected both to playing the music well and enjoying a live performance when there is so much time that has lapsed since practicing together. In order to do the music well, remembering the guitar chords and lyrics and timing requires all of his attention. The most enjoyable part of his “band life”….performing…. is diminished by the most necessary part.
It dawned on me that this is very similar to diabetes self-management. If we practice diabetes self-management on a daily basis it becomes a familiar and comfortable routine. The more often we practice anything the easier it becomes, and the less attention it demands. On the other hand, if we lose contact with the routine for a time, as I often see patients do between visits with their medical team, we lose that natural connection, and diabetes self-management becomes awkward and frustrating. Staying connected to our diabetes management daily is the key that leads to balancing our diabetes lifestyle with our “regular” lifestyle.
So think of daily diabetes management as important practice sessions that get you ready for the big “show”- your life full of good health! It has worked for me….it will work for you.
