How To Get Your Blood Sugar Down Quickly As Possible

Okay, so if you have a blood sugar running in the above target range, 180 or above, two hours after eating, you will want to know how to get your blood sugar down as quickly as possible.

Three steps that will help.

Step 1: drink water, not any other beverages that are “made with water,” like coffee, tea, or diet soda. I’m speaking of water, plain or iced. This will help with rehydration because when your blood sugar is running on the high side, it can be from being dehydrated and can dehydrate you. We also eliminate excess blood sugar through urine….lots of water, of course, speed that process along.

Step 2: Stick to a very low-carb diet if your reading is running on the higher side. Choose foods that are protein like cheese, chicken, beef, pork, or eggs. These are straight protein foods that do not contain any carbohydrates. Once your blood sugar starts coming back to the target range, you can include carb-containing foods. This will just be a short period of time that you will need to go very low carb.

Step 3: Exercise. You also can try exercising but make sure you are not exercising if your blood sugar is above 250 mg/dl. Check your urine for ketones, and do not exercise if ketones are present because your blood sugar may rise higher. Ketones in your urine indicate you don’t have enough insulin to lower your blood sugar at that time.   And, keep in mind that blood sugar drops from exercise can occur over a 24 hour period. So you definitely need to continue to monitor your readings watching for any low blood sugar readings caused by your exercise. Exercise is great. It will improve your insulin sensitivity, so I’m a superfan of exercise as part of diabetes management.

Let's Add a Step 4 for One's on Medications

If you are on diabetes medications, make sure to continue to take your diabetes medications as prescribed and if you continue to see a trend of higher readings, share these blood sugar levels with your doctor to see if you need a change in your medication (timing or dosage). That calls for step 4 in my recommendations: to speak to your doctor if you are seeing trends in higher blood sugar readings.

Thanks for watching and until next time, cheers to your health.
