Pfizer’s Lyrica Unsuccessful in Managing the Pain of Diabetic Neuropathy

Pfizer recently announced that Lyrica, a drug used to control nerve pain associated with fibromyalgia, was not successful in a study to evaluate its effectiveness in diabetic neuropathy. As many as 30% of people with diabetes experience nerve damage thought to be associated with persistent high blood glucose levels and other metabolic abnormalities. Peripheral neuropathy affects hands and feet mostly, and can range from numbness and tingling to severe pain. Pain management is the primary treatment, and sensation loss from diabetic neuropathy can contribute to serious infections especially of the feet.
